Compete.com is a competitive search analytics service that harnesses community inputs to develop a statistical profile of the top 1mm websites. For my purposes, it’s a little too macro – walk before you run, and all that. However, it’s a neat (currently free) way to do interesting comparisons among various services.

According to this, Twitter has a huge (and growing) lead among the top challengers. Personally, I don’t get the value of Twitter — it’s sort of a circle-jerk of half thought out nonsense, akin to playing bumper cars and shouting out short sentences to your friends as you drive by. The one exception: breaking news with inputs from citizen journalists. Then the short, frequent, contextual bulletins make sense, and in fact are far ahead of what most traditional media outlets can offer in that regard.
